Questions

The questions I help my clients answer

These are the questions that actually get asked once the door is closed. Not the polished version for the performance review. The real one, usually said out loud for the first time. They sort into the five stages of the 5V Alignment Method, because that is the order they tend to resolve in.

If one of these is yours, you are not the only person asking it.

ValuesFive questions

What are my values now?

Not necessarily the ones you would list. As adults we rarely go back and check. You are likely carrying values from your parents, from friends, or from a leader you worked for early in your career, and some of them no longer match who you are today. Values is where 5V starts, because every decision after this one gets measured against them.

You inherited more of them than you think. Most of the values setting your calendar came from your parents, your early managers, or the version of you that needed to prove something at 27. None of that makes them wrong. It makes them worth checking, because a value you never chose will still quietly veto every decision you try to make. We separate the two, and you keep the ones you would pick again today.

Almost certainly, and that is usually why the decision will not resolve. Freedom pulls against security. Ambition pulls against being present. Loyalty pulls against honesty. When two values you hold equally sit on opposite sides of one choice, the problem is not discipline. It is ranking. Rank them honestly and the decision often makes itself.

Start with who you are when nothing is being measured. Most high achievers can describe their role in detail and themselves in almost none, because the role has been answering the question for twenty years. Take the title away and the honest answer is usually already there. You have just never been asked to say it out loud.

Ask what they actually need from you, rather than what you have assumed they need. Usually it is you, present and not depleted, and not the specific salary or the specific title. Wanting more is not ingratitude, and changing direction is not abandoning anyone. The disappointment you are bracing for is often a conversation you have not had yet.

Do not quit first. Get specific about what you hate, because it is rarely the whole job. It is the 6am inbox, the leader who treats you like a resource instead of a person, the meeting where your work comes back as someone else's idea. Once it is named we can see whether it is fixable where you are, or whether the money is the only thing still holding you there.

VisionFour questions

What do I really want for my life and career?

You already know more than you think. You have just never been asked to describe it in detail. Vision is the work of seeing it precisely: what you want, what it feels like, and who you are once you have it. Headlines are not enough. A future you can only describe in general terms cannot tell you which decision to make on Monday.

Stop looking for the job title and start with the day. Describe a Tuesday you would want to repeat: who you talk to, what you decide, what you are not doing anymore, when you stop. The detail is the whole exercise. A direction you can only state in headlines will not survive contact with a real offer, and it will not tell you which offer to take.

You build the next income before you leave, not after. In practice that means keeping the salary while you test the thing quietly, pricing it properly rather than apologetically, and naming the number that makes leaving safe instead of brave. Most of my clients do not leap. They plan it far enough ahead that the last day is uneventful.

This is the one worth answering slowly, because the old definition is still running. You chose it early, it worked, and it never got reviewed. Success at 45 is rarely the same shape as success at 28, and holding the old one is why the promotion landed flat. Write the new one down. A definition left vague defaults back to the one you inherited.

Pick one thing you can do this week that you have been deferring until things calm down. Say the honest sentence in one meeting. Decline one commitment. Book the call. Momentum does not come from a five-year plan, it comes from evidence that you will act on your own behalf, and that evidence arrives much faster than a plan does.

VoiceFour questions

Why is the voice inside my head so negative?

Because most of it is not conscious. About 95% of our thoughts come from the subconscious mind, so the commentary running underneath your day was written a long time ago and has never been reviewed. Your thoughts, and your voice, create your reality. Voice is where we work on both of them: the one inside your head, and the one you use in the room.

Decide it before you are in the room. A boundary that gets renegotiated live was never a boundary, it was an opening position. Say the short version, do not explain it twice, and expect the push. The first time you hold it is uncomfortable and the second time is much less so. What you are building is not toughness. It is repetition.

Say it plainly, then stop talking. Most of the shrinking happens in the sentences after the honest one, where you soften it, apologize for it, or hand the point back to keep the room comfortable. The honest thing is usually welcome. It is the retreat afterwards that costs you.

Because somewhere you learned that naming it would make you arrogant, and that lesson has outlasted its usefulness. Describing your work accurately is not boasting. If you will not say what you are good at, the room will assign you a smaller version of it and then manage you at that size. Practice the sentence until it is boring to you.

The gap usually shows up in your energy before it shows up in your behavior. Two versions of you are being maintained, and the maintenance is the cost. It looks like being flat by Friday, short with the people you like most, and needing a while in the car before you can walk inside. Close the gap and that energy stops going into the performance.

VibrationFive questions

What do I need to do to start feeling better?

Change the state you are choosing from. When you make choices from fear or worry you are in a contracted state, and your options narrow with you. When you choose from peace, they widen. This is not positive thinking. It is the practical difference between deciding your next move while braced and deciding it while settled.

You will hear them fastest in the sentences you say without thinking. I am not technical. I am bad at money. I cannot ask for that. Nobody senior is going to back me. They arrived early, they were true of a much younger version of you, and they are still setting the ceiling. We surface them and check each one against the evidence you have accumulated since.

Because taking it in would mean agreeing with it. Deflecting a compliment feels like modesty and works like refusal. Watch what you do next time: the credit goes to the team, to luck, to timing, to anything except you. Practice saying thank you and nothing after it. It is a small thing that tells you a great deal about what you believe you are allowed to have.

In my experience it is almost never capability. It is usually one of three things: you have not defined what you want in enough detail to act on it, you are protecting something you have already outgrown, or you are waiting for permission that nobody is coming to give you. Which one it is matters, because each has a different fix.

Because the pattern is being selected, not sent. Something in it is familiar, and familiar reads as safe even when it is not good for you. The same difficult boss. The same role where you carry more than your share. The same dynamic at home. Once you can name what the pattern gives you, you can start choosing differently at the point of choice, which comes much earlier than the point of pain.

Look at what you have been willing to make smaller in order to be chosen. Successful women are often taught to lead with the achievement and then apologize for it, which selects for men who are impressed rather than men who are steady. A partner who is threatened by your success will tell you early. Believing him the first time saves years.

VelocityFive questions

Why does my job feel like a grind?

Because effort without alignment is a grind by definition. When Values, Vision, Voice and Vibration line up, the same week takes less out of you and things start opening. Velocity is the last stage for a reason. Speed applied before the other four is just a faster version of the wrong direction.

Effort is not your problem. Direction is. The right things done out of alignment with what you actually want produce motion without progress, which is more tiring than doing nothing at all. It is why the promotion, the move and the reset each felt better briefly and then felt identical. Correct the direction and the same effort starts to compound.

Usually because you are pushing against your own choices. When what you are doing matches who you are, the work is still hard, but it stops needing to be forced. Constant strain is information. It means some part of your life is being carried rather than lived, and it is worth finding out which part.

Start with one conversation rather than one decision. Most people at this point do not need a new plan. They need to say the whole thing out loud once, to someone who has no stake in the outcome. That is what a private consult is for. You will leave it knowing whether the next move is a change of role, a change of direction, or a change in how you are doing the one you already have.

Confidence comes after, not before. You will not feel ready, and waiting to feel ready is the actual obstacle. Take the smallest version of the thing, do it badly once, and collect the evidence. Every client I have worked with who made a bold move made it while nervous. What changed was that they stopped requiring certainty first.

Because money compensates you. It does not align you. It was enough while it was buying something you wanted, and it stopped when it started buying your tolerance for how you spend your days. That shift is not ingratitude. It usually means you met the goal you set years ago and never set a new one.
